A UNIQUELY EMOTIONAL DOCUMENTARY FEATURE FILM THAT WILL TOUCH THE HEART OF AUDIENCES AROUND THE WORLD. FOUR FEMALE CLIMBERS FACE THE SPORTING CHALLENGE OF A LIFETIME AS THEY ATTEMPT TO COMPETE IN THE FIRST EVER OLYMPIC CLIMBING COMPETITION AT THE TOKYO 2020 OLYMPICS.

The Wall - Climb for Gold follows four elite climbers, Janja Garnbret, Shauna Coxsey, Brooke Raboutou, and Miho Nonaka, over an extraordinary two years. They battle through Olympic qualifying events to earn their place at Tokyo, then face a gruelling season of competition and training that sees everything put on hold when the Covid-19 pandemic forces the Games to be postponed. As the young women confront their own mental and physical demons en-route to Tokyo, the film reveals an astonishing and inspiring insight into what it takes to be an Olympian and ultimately what it means to be human.

THE MAKING OF THE SCORE

The score had to convey the huge range of emotional highs and lows, from exhilaration to despair and a roller-coaster of a journey that they were all experiencing. I wanted the music to be edgy, dynamic and contemporary, but I also wanted to create the feeling of being inside the minds of the climbers. Each climber has their own style and personality, so we tried to reflect that with their individual themes. There are deep baselines, gritty synths, distortions and drums that help add energy, momentum and tension during the competitions, while still maintaining a youthful and emotional feel. We wanted to reflect the kind of musical genres that they may be listening to. As they start to focus and believe in themselves, the music carries hope alongside the gravitas of the monumental achievement but there is a complexity of layering and moody, emotional ambiences that makes it feel more timeless. Orchestral, epic, inspiring, exhilarating, motivational, ending with grandeur and a triumphant finish. A great score to work out to in January 2022.

SHAUNA COXSEY: Shauna’s theme reflects her personality. She is mentally and physically tough, complex, hard edged, steely, dogged in her persistence, she puts everything on the line when it counts. She’s from an industrial town in the North of England; the environment is tough, so we brought in subtle industrial metallic elements to reflect that.

BROOKE: Brooke is the youngest of the bunch, the talented wildcard. The soft but driving pace of the hang drum reflected her well, but her theme is infused with a really effective mix of drama and reflection that really draws you in to focus on her moments.

MIHO: Miho is a city girl, born and bred in Tokyo city. Her ambition was always to be the strongest. So we focussed on reflecting the edgy grit and modern style of the city blending a darker more synth tinged edge alongside Japanese Taiko Drums to evoke her going into battle attitude. This contrasts with her inner self which is quite fragile and sensitive - as if Miho’s always trying to build up the strongest shell around her to protect herself.

JANJA: Janja is from Slovenia and has an immense natural talent. Her music needed to capture the awe, anticipation and drama of what she is becoming – an unrivalled mega-star. However, we also needed to feel the haunted darkness of her demons, where we feel a tension and seed of introspective self doubt. This eventually gives way to grandeur and an epic and triumphant finish with pace and youthful vibrance with electronics and strong heart pounding beats.
